Recommended for: Golf Course Greens, Tees, and Lawns
Recognized for its short internodes and tolerance to low mowing by Dr. Glenn Curton at the University of Georgia Experiment Station in Tifton, Tifgreen has achieved notoriety for its use in greens, fairways, and tees. The aggressive warm-season turfgrass is highly resistant to diseases, poor-quality irrigation water, traffic, and drought. Bermudagrasses require less irrigation and maintain their aggressiveness for summer play. Tifgreen overseeds well in the fall.
Description:
Tifgreen is a hybrid bermudagrass of a cross between Cynodon dactylon X C. transvaalensis. It is a low-growing, dark green, rapid spreading, bermudagrass that makes a dense turf.
Uses:
Tifgreen is commonly used on golf course greens and tees, home lawns and commercial landscapes.
Characteristics:
Temperature Range of Adaptation - Tifgreen grows best in hot climates within 45 degrees to the equator. Temperatures in excess of 100 degrees F. (38 degrees C) are readily tolerated by healthy Tifgreen.
Water Quality Tolerance:
Like Tifway, Tifgreen can exceed 2500 ppm total salts concentrations when grown on a suitable drained soil profile.
Drought Tolerance:
Under similar growing conditions, Tifgreen would use less water than Tifway. One to two inches (25 to 50 mm) of actual available water weekly to the plant will provide an acceptable turf surface. Weed Tolerance:
Tifgreen, when properly maintained, efficiently competes with the presence of many turf weeds. If weeds occur, approved pesticides for weed control have little or no effect on Tifgreen growth.
Insect Pest Tolerance:
With the exception of certain leaf feeding insects, Tifgreen demonstrates quick recovery from damage. Pests can be easily controlled chemically with no harm to the plant. Soil Fertility Range:
Tifgreen grows best in soils with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0. Soil levels of 100 pounds/acre (112 kg/hectare) of phosphorous and 150 to 200 pounds/acre (168 to 224 kg/hectare) potassium will provide a healthy growing plant. Nitrogen applied at 1 pound/1000 sq. ft. per month will provide a healthy plant when combined with the recommended phosphorous and potassium. Establishment:
Tifgreen is a sterile (no viable seed) triploid plant which can be successfully propagated as sprigs (rhizomes, stolons and stems) or as sod.
