In 1956 Southern Turf Nurseries was organized on the fertile soils of Tift County, Georgia. We became the pioneers in the development of techniques for producing, harvesting, delivering, and installing, vegetatively propagated hybrid Bermudagrasses for golf courses and sports fields.

sandy loam soils, irrigated with center pivot systems

Besides providing state-of-the-art turf grass for golf courses and athletic fields, Southern Turf Nurseries provides the following services to help clients in the installation process:
Machine Planting of Sprigs
Sprigging provides the most practical method of
establishment for large plantings such as athletic
fields and golf courses. A grass sprig consists
of a stem or rhizome segment with at least one node
or crown (multiple nodes) and any leaves and roots
that might be attached to the node. Usually, 3 or
more nodes are found on a single sprig. Since bermudagrasses
and zoysiagrasses have rhizomes, they are the best
suited for sprigging.
Most sprigs are broadcast over the site with a sprig
distributor, a mechanical sprig machine. This method
enables a large area to be covered quickly. The higher
the rate of sprigs, the faster the coverage.
Big Roll Sod
42" wide rolls of sod speeds up installation time and reduces the number of seams so sod knits together quicker. Big Roll sod is available thick cut and washed.

Row Planting
Row planting is a sprigging method used to convert golf course fairways or sports fields from common to Hybrid Bermudas. State of the art automated equipment is used to open a small furrow where live sprigs are channelled, pressed into the rows, and then sealed by rolling.
